Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide
How you care for your tattoo in the first 2-4 weeks determines how it looks for decades. Proper aftercare prevents infection, reduces fading, and ensures your tattoo heals sharp and vibrant.
First 24 Hours
Your artist will wrap the fresh tattoo in cling film or a second-skin bandage. Leave it on for 2-4 hours (or up to 3 days for second-skin). When you remove it, gently wash with unscented antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.
Days 2-7: The Itchy Phase
Your tattoo will begin to peel and itch. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser 2-3 times daily. Do NOT scratch, pick, or peel. Picking removes ink and can cause scarring. Wear loose clothing over the area.
Weeks 2-4: Final Healing
The surface skin will fully peel. The tattoo may look slightly dull or cloudy — this is normal as the inner layers are still healing. Continue moisturising. Avoid direct sun exposure and do not submerge in water (pools, baths, sea).
What to Avoid
For the first 2-4 weeks: no swimming, no sunbathing, no saunas or steam rooms, no gym sessions that cause heavy sweating on the tattooed area, no tight clothing rubbing the tattoo. Do not apply sunscreen until fully healed.
Long-term Care
Once healed, always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen on tattooed skin before sun exposure. UV light is the primary cause of tattoo fading. Moisturised skin holds colour better — make it part of your daily routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I shower with a new tattoo?
Yes — brief showers are fine. Avoid soaking the tattoo. Don't aim the shower spray directly at it. Pat dry gently afterwards.
What moisturiser is best for tattoos?
Unscented lotions like Lubriderm, Eucerin, or Bepanthen are widely recommended. Avoid petroleum-based products like Vaseline — they can draw ink out of fresh tattoos.
When can I go swimming with a new tattoo?
Wait at least 3-4 weeks, or until the tattoo is fully healed. Swimming pools contain chlorine that can fade fresh ink and introduce bacteria.
Is it normal for my tattoo to peel?
Yes — peeling is a normal part of healing. The tattooed skin sheds its top layer, just like a sunburn. Never pick the peeling skin.
